Chiucago (IL) - Most of us poor smokers like to think we'll be one of
the lucky ones who makes it to 100 unscathed. And now researchers
think they may soon be able to tell which of us will, through a simple
urine test.
Only about one in 10 smokers gets lung cancer. "A history of smoking
has always been thought of as a predictor of lung cancer, but it is
actually not very accurate," said Jian-Min Yuan, associate professor
of public health at the University of Minnesota. "Smoking absolutely
increases your risk, but why it does so in some people but not others
is a big question."
Researchers collected data from over 80,000 men and women, carrying
out in-person interviews to assess levels of cigarette smoking,
dietary and other lifestyle factors. They also collected blood and
urine samples from more than 50,000 patients.
The nicotine metabolite NNAL had been shown to induce lung cancer in
laboratory animals, but the effect in humans hadn't yet been studied.
To evaluate its impact, researchers identified 246 current smokers who
later developed lung cancer and 245 smokers who did not during the
10-year period following the initial interview and collection of urine
samples.
Patients with a mid-range level of NNAL had a 43 per cent increased
risk of lung cancer compared with those with the lowest levels, while
those at the highest level had more than double the risk of lung
cancer, after taking into account the effect of number of cigarettes
per day and number of years of smoking.
Levels of nicotine in the urine were also calculated. Those with the
highest levels of nicotine and NNAL had eight and a half times the
risk of lung cancer compared with smokers who had the lowest levels
after accounting for smoking history.
"Smoking leads to lung cancer, but there are about 60 possible
carcinogens in tobacco smoke, and the more accurately we can identify
the culprit, the better we will become at predicting risk," said Yuan.
The results were presented at the American Association for Cancer
Research 100th Annual Meeting 2009.

There's no reason for us non-smokers to be paying anymore best car insurance medical
insurance then we already are. The sooner tobacco becomes a banned
substance the cheaper our medical insurance will be. It's past time to
stop fussing over taxes and earnings and to chinese lessons chicago on with the act of
building a society that controls run away emo clothing on the most
damaging of industies. We've got guns, fatty foods, alcohol, body
crippling occupations that are taking down millions, and when it comes
time to pay the insurance bill the guy 3 doors down is a big fat zero.
Not only is he not paying for medical insurance, but he's the biggest
offender of dangerous drugs and the lousest cry baby when it comes to
legalizing pot, tobacco, and alcohol. As a paid volvo insurance member of a large
corporations medical insurance plan I know I'm carrying that slob 3
doors down on my backside by constantly putting dollars into my
doctors pocket. Where the small business man just doesn't ever go to
see a doctor. Politicians are counter productive allowing medical
services to get so far out of wack that you can't count on it being
there when you retire. Corporations more and more are asking for
emo clothes co-pays, and sticking employees chinese tutor chicago prescription costs while
lawyers and judges are thumbing their noses at injured workers. Nobody
ever said there was anything sane about the way society would do
things, and it's maddening to see so many suffering today. Which begs
me to ask, where are all these small business families buying their
attention deficit disorder drugs from that the whole family seems to
be enjoying taking? My parents have retiree medical insurance, but
custom poker cards and more of indie fashion responsbility of paying the doctor bills has been
shifted to them in multiple insurance quotes retirement years. I think we could end
illegal drug usage in this country if one of the requirements for
owning a small business car insurance to be able to pay out medical insurance to
everyone within the company. I'm sick of hearing from mouthy abusive
small business people who've contributed nothing to help society
except independent style run up the costs to protecting us from whole life insurance pushers and add
to our medical insurance problems.
